Before we start chopping, I would like to quickly discuss these flexible vegetables, a popular misconception surrounding them, and tips for choosing the finest bell peppers.
Being able to properly select and identify good quality ingredients is a crucial skill in order to produce good quality food. However, it is not just the flavor of the food that is affected by the quality of the ingredients, but also its appearance in the kitchen.
Regardless of whether you purchase peppers or pick them from your garden, you may be selective about the peppers you choose.
The presence of noticeable dark blemishes or mildew, particularly if the pepper has been mishandled during transportation or is infected with some kind of disease, can indicate that the pepper is beginning to decompose and is old. Additionally, other imperfections such as wrinkles or soft spots may also be present on the peppers.
Believing that choosing peppers based on the number of bumps is actually a myth, some individuals hope to have social media posts about male or female peppers.
The number of bumps on the individual pepper plant, as well as characteristics such as sweetness, are due to the growing conditions and variety of the plant. There is no distinction between female or male peppers.
Four Different Methods for Cutting Bell Peppers.
Well, let’s get to the real purpose of this article, shall we? There are generally four different ways you can cut bell peppers. Depending on what you plan on doing with the peppers, you can choose which kind you prefer. Are you planning on dicing the pepper as part of a complex recipe, or maybe just stuffing it with other ingredients? Or perhaps you prefer slicing the pepper into rings for a salad? It will depend on your personal preference as well as what you plan on doing with the pepper in the end.
If you are not familiar with the specific terminology, don’t worry, I will simplify it for you. The recipe usually includes instructions that clearly indicate how to cut each ingredient.
How To Julienne Bell Peppers
Start by removing the stem and discarding the top and bottom of the pepper. If the stem is still attached, also remove it. Additionally, remove the top stem of the bell pepper and lay the pepper flat on its side.
As you go, release the core from the walls, and slide your knife along the inside of the pepper. Lay the pepper flat on its side again, just like you did when you made the last cut. Slice down through one side of the bell pepper, then stand the pepper up on its bottom side.
In the ultimate julienne cut, eliminate any pale pith from the meat, and place the bell pepper with the skin facing downwards on your chopping board once the center has been taken out.
The bell pepper has been cut into julienne strips approximately 4-5cm long and 2mm thick, with the pith removed.
How To Dice Bell Peppers
Start by removing and discarding the bottom and top (stem end) of the bell pepper, while keeping the stem attached to the removed top portion. Then, lay the bell pepper flat on its side.
Slice off the long stem of the pepper, then remove the core by sliding your knife along the inside walls of the pepper. Cut open one side of the pepper and stand it up with the back facing up.
Cut the pepper into chunks or squares, and then cut those into strips. Take a few of those strips and cut them perpendicular to the original cutting direction. Lay the pepper flat on your cutting board.
The magnitude of the previous incisions can be replicated to the analogous manner in which the upper and lower parts of the pepper were eliminated.
How To Slice Bell Pepper Rings
By slicing the rings, it hinders the bell pepper from compressing together effortlessly and provides a grip for future use. Keep the lower part intact while eliminating the upper portion (stem end) of the bell pepper, then place the pepper horizontally on a surface.
To eliminate and dispose of the core, glide your knife along the inner surfaces of the pepper.
Cut thin cross-sections of the bell pepper perfectly with a very sharp knife, while keeping the pepper flat on its side.
How To Stuff Bell Pepper
If you prefer, keep the unaltered upper part as a ‘cover’ and eliminate the upper portion (the end with the stem) of the bell pepper by placing it horizontally.
To create a flat enough base, remove only enough of the bottom pepper to create a hole in it. This will prevent it from overflowing or wobbling when stuffed, and trim off a very small amount from the bottom of the pepper to make it “flatten” out.
Stuff the empty pepper with whichever filling you desire and dispose of the center. Eliminate the core by gliding your knife along the inner surfaces of the pepper.
