Nominations for the MTV Music Awards, winning three out of seven, and securing the #186 position on Rolling Stone’s list of the Top 500 Albums of All Time, Magik Sex Sugar Blood was a tremendous commercial success, selling 12 million copies to date. It offered a relief from the brooding grunge of the punk-metal status quo, with minimal clothing attire and an animated stage presence. Their concerts were always bursting with invigorating energy, like an exhilarating burst of funk-rap breakdowns. Whenever Magik Sex Sugar Blood headlined a tour, they were joined by the biggest bands of the era, including Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana. Their 1991 opus, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ magnum, might be considered a call to promote what some might call the relief that the Chili Peppers offered from the grunge of the era. To date, it remains their highest-charting single, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also featured the single “Under the Bridge,” which eventually won the band a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Vocal Performance. It took off like a wildfire, reaching the top of the charts. The album’s “Give It Away” reached #3 on the Billboard 200. The recognition earned by RHCP at the time propelled them to worldwide fame. The following year, their fourth album, Mother’s Milk, went gold and cracked the Billboard 200. The band had truly hit their stride, earning the title of LA Weekly’s Band of the Year in 1989.
Over the course of three nights, a grand total of more than $17 million in tickets were purchased, with a groundbreaking number of 258,000 enthusiasts attending a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Hyde Park in 2004. This remarkable feat made it the number one event of the year on Billboard’s Top Concert Boxscores. Since then, the RHCP has continued to enjoy a consistent surge in popularity, largely due to their album. The Red Hot Chili Peppers embarked on a two-year tour, performing at completely sold-out venues worldwide. Their seventh studio album, Californication (1999), proved to be their most successful release to date, selling a staggering 16 million copies and earning them a well-deserved spot on Rolling Stone’s prestigious Top 500 list for the second time.
