Watch: Video shows close encounter with great white shark off the Jersey Shore

A recent video depicts a near encounter between a great white shark and individuals on a fishing expedition near the Jersey Shore.

Mike Cavallo was fishing with his daughter and a companion a couple of miles away from Point Pleasant Beach on Friday. A mighty white shark made an unsuccessful attempt to bite the fish after Cavallo caught a black sea bass. This was a moment that Cavallo will always remember, captured on camera.

Cavallo said, “I never thought I would see such a complete shock in my entire life, not even from a great white shark.”

Currently, the annual International Lighthouse Film Festival at Long Beach Island is featuring “The Terror of 12 Days,” a “docudrama made-for-tv” from 2004, which is based on a series of deadly shark attacks that occurred in other parts of the Jersey Shore back in 1916. There is currently a renewed focus on sharks in Long Beach Island.

Jack Sholder, the filmmaker, visited LBI for a unique screening.

Sholder expressed, “It is truly amazing to witness it with a crowd.” Sholder stated, “When you create something for television, you miss out on the opportunity to experience it alongside an audience.”

Nonetheless, Sholder mentioned that during his childhood, he would spend his entire summer vacations at the Jersey Shore. Interestingly, the movie was shot in Cape Town, New Jersey, instead of South Africa.

He stated, “We visited Atlantic City each summer and we would spend the entire season there. I was genuinely excited to receive an invitation. I was pleased that they were going to showcase the movie.”

Although shark attacks frequently grab attention in the media, professionals assert that they are still exceedingly uncommon.
