The inaugural Dr. Sally Ride Quarter, which was found to be minted on a Jefferson Nickel planchet, has been authenticated and appraised by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as NGC MS-67, and will be up for auction by GreatCollections on April 30th.
In 2022, a particular coin error occurred when presses used Nickel Jefferson planchets to strike Mint Philadelphia quarters. As part of the inaugural year of the American Women Quarters Program, the quarter featuring Sally Ride was released.
The first discovered instances of incorrect planchet errors for the Dr. Sally Ride Quarter, issued in 2022, have been found. These errors, which are mistakenly released into circulation by the Mint and later identified, result in a decrease in the overall quantity. The production process at the U.S. Mint has undergone significant improvements in recent years.
Noted error coin authority Jon Sullivan said, “It is the only example known for the Dr. Sally Ride quarter, and one of only a few of the whole American Women Quarter series. Recently-produced errors like this are in demand, as they are much more scarce than most similar errors from 20-30 years ago.”
The current bid at the time of writing stood at $6,000. The auction, conducted by GreatCollections, where the error coin is being presented, will conclude on Sunday, April 30th.
In 2022, Wong May Anna, Warren Otero-Nina, Mankiller Wilma, Angelou Maya, and Mint U.S. Celebrated the first American woman in space. Sally Dr., An esteemed educator, astronaut, and physicist, was noted for her accomplishments.
