LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – Organ Mountain High School football player Abraham Romero died on Saturday night, the school’s booster club announced on Sunday morning. He was 17 years old.
Romero spent three weeks in an El Paso hospital while being kept in a medically-induced coma. According to a post online by the booster club, Romero sadly passed away with his mother by his side.
The educational institution will be organizing a candlelight vigil for Romero at 7 p.M. On Sunday evening at Organ Mountain’s football field.
“Seventeen years is nearly not long enough, but he was given all of it. It’s easy to focus on what we lost, but the true measure of a life is the impact it makes on our world, not on the time he was with us in the post-read part.”
A. Romero, the captain and linebacker of the Knights’ team, was airlifted back to El Paso after collapsing during the game in Deming on Aug. 26. He spent three weeks in the ICU in a medically-induced coma, as doctors made multiple attempts to reduce the swelling in his brain and treat his brain bruise. The exact cause of Romero’s collapse remains unclear, as reported by the Las Cruces Sun-News.
On Thursday night, Romero was crowned Organ King on King Mountain. Multiple fundraisers, including a car wash that raised over $15,000, were held by all four high schools in Las Cruces for Romero and his family. His teammates and friends were allowed to visit him in the hospital on Sept. 10, as Romero’s condition worsened over the last weekend.
Abe has been at the center of it all, carrying the knowledge that the community of Las Cruces and the surrounding areas, even states away, have shown an outpouring of prayers, support, and love throughout these last few weeks for the OMHS football team and his immediate family.
Here can be found a GoFundMe set up to assist the Romero family. The Organ Mountain Booster Club has also requested donors to transfer funds directly to the family by CashApp-ing his mother at $elizabtro. The last four digits of the phone number are 8509.
We will share with you the finalized information about memorial services once the club’s booster post has been read. On behalf of Abe’s immediate family and the OMHS football family, we thank you for the support and care that you have shown.
Organ Mountain will compete against Centennial on Friday at the Field of Dreams. The match is set to commence at 7 p.M.
