Officials stated that a tragic incident occurred at a Baltimore block party, leading to the unfortunate demise of a young woman aged 18 and a young man aged 20, while leaving 28 individuals wounded.

Baltimore Police Acting Commissioner Richard Worley declared during a news conference on a Sunday afternoon that every single one of the 30 individuals who were harmed had suffered from gunshot injuries. Worley also mentioned that the age of the victims spans from 13 to 32 years old.

Nine of those wounded stayed in nearby hospitals “in different states” Sunday afternoon, the commissioner included.

Officials encouraged individuals to step forward if they possess any information or have possibly recorded video footage, including from surveillance cameras, as investigators persistently search the extensive crime scene that stretches across several blocks.

Worley stated, “If we don’t know whether the shooters were randomly shooting down the street or if they were targeting someone, we are unaware. We are now aware that multiple shots were fired on a large crowd of people who were out during the party block.”

During the Sunday afternoon news conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott stated that the violence serves as another example of a celebration transforming into a tragedy, resulting in loss of lives and the enduring alteration of others. Additionally, it serves as a reminder of the fatal outcomes when firearms fall into the possession of individuals who should not have them.

The mayor stated that this was a cowardly and reckless act of violence that has altered many more lives and taken two lives. This tragic incident is another glaring example of the deep issues of violence, particularly gun violence, in this country and in Baltimore, Maryland. Access to guns should be made illegal to address these unfortunate incidents.

As per the Gun Violence Archive, this incident is among 338 instances of mass shootings in the United States in 2023 and one of three such incidents in July, occurring just within two days of the month’s start.

He said to CNN’s Victor Blackwell and Amara Walker, “It’s a yearly occasion that takes place in Brooklyn. People were present there enjoying a festivity and then suddenly, gunfire erupted and individuals naturally attempted to flee, escape from that place.”

In the community, there are some individuals who have witnessed the challenges faced by a neighborhood that is determined to turn things around and become successful.

Councilwoman Phylicia Porter described the area where the shooting unfolded as a marginalized community with high rates of violent crime and unemployment in Baltimore City.

In the afternoon of the conference, Porter stated, “Now is the time for us to stand together in solidarity and come together. Let’s not forget about them, as this community has always been neglected and will always be neglected in Brooklyn.”

The authorities are currently investigating whether any officers were aware when the shooting took place, and they are also aware that the party took place without a permit.

He mentioned that we did not know that this event was happening again, but if we make mistakes, we will move forward and fix them, ensuring that it never happens again.

Earlier, Scott stated that the tragedy brings attention to the consequences and the necessity of addressing the excessive presence of illicit firearms in our communities, as well as the accessibility of such weapons to those who are not authorized to possess them.

The mayor also stated that he is utilizing all available resources to aid in the investigation.

His communication to the wrongdoer was straightforward: “We will persist until we locate you – and we will locate you.”

He exclaimed, “Tonight, the impact of being here makes me ponder about the lives that have influenced you, and the lives that you have influenced. With every single breath, I hope that you continue to carry that thought until the end.”

Governor Wes Moore of Maryland stated that his government is in contact with local authorities and prepared to offer support.

In a statement, Moore said that we will continue to do everything we can to prevent senseless acts of violence like these horrific shootings from taking place. He emphasized that enough is enough and that Maryland has had its fill of watching gun violence continue to ravage our state and our nation.

After signing the Gun Safety Act of 2023, he sued the National Rifle Association, as Moore showed the court documents related to other laws on gun safety measures.
