During the 2022 Emmy Awards, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak playfully teased each other, joking about their initial lack of a social life together.
On Monday evening, the duo graced the stage to present the accolade for exceptional writing in a limited or anthology series or film. Kaling playfully quipped during their introduction, “Congratulations you indolent individuals. How are you managing to evade the consequences? We produced 22 [episodes] annually. It would consume your entire existence. There was no time for other ventures and no time for a vibrant social life. You were left with no choice but to establish intricate connections with your co-stars.” The two performers initially crossed paths while working on The Office and had a romantic relationship from 2004 to 2007. Despite the separation, they have remained exceptionally close companions ever since. Novak contributed, “Perhaps you filmed the entire project at your extravagant, opulent retreat in complete candor. Now you can effortlessly compose a self-contained masterpiece, assemble a cast of movie stars, shoot it for a few weeks, and return to your lavish, opulent retreat.”
When you start dating someone, it can be a little weird when your best friend becomes a platonic friend. It’s common to have a thing in common that makes dating not going to end up. (And Other Concerns),” Kaling said, “I have never ever addressed those assumptions about the potential of the former couple getting back together.” Many fans have speculated that Novak is secretly the father to Kaling’s four-year-old daughter Katherine and two-year-old daughter Spencer, due to the types of assumptions made about the potential of the former couple getting back together.
