Man shot in the head at point-blank range survives, considered a ‘medical miracle’ by doctors

A man from Missouri, who was shot in the head and left for dead, is astonishing doctors with his remarkable strides in recovery – according to Gray/KMOV News in St. Charles County.

On November 24, 2021, Leslie Reeves, aged 45, returned home and was shot in the head at close range by Chris Smith, aged 49.

Smith cannot remember many specifics from that evening but mentioned that he and Reeves had gone to the bar for a few drinks.

Police later reconstructed the events of the evening, drawing from evidence found at the crime scene. However, he has no recollection of the subsequent events, as the duo made their way back to Smith’s residence.

Smith told me, “I must have come running into the kitchen and pistol-whipped him, or I must have come running down when he broke through my back door, I guess.”

Officials declare that Robert Tarr, a 49-year-old person, is accused of shooting Reeves, leading to her demise, before later turning the weapon on Smith.

“While I was on the ground, he shot me in the head in a manner resembling an execution,” Smith stated.

He said he lay helplessly on the kitchen floor for the next 14 hours, bleeding and fading in and out of consciousness.

On Thanksgiving, friends and family started to get concerned when there was no news from Reeves or Smith, but it wasn’t until later.

When a friend asked police to do a welfare check at the house, officers found Reeves dead and Smith clinging to life.

Dr. Chetan Gowda, a trauma doctor, expressed, “Due to the severity of the injury, we were uncertain about the potential consequences … The result, despite our awareness of it being a solitary gunshot wound to the head.” “Our primary goal was to successfully navigate him through the operating room initially, with the intention of transferring him to the intensive care unit for ongoing assistance in his recovery.”

After successfully completing a craniotomy, Dr. Jose Espinosa, a neurosurgeon, relieved the swelling in Grim’s brain, providing a promising prognosis for his surgery.

Weeks turned into months, and as Smith was gradually weaned off sedation medication, his medical team started to see signs of improvement.

His initial recollection was in February when he awakened in the medical facility, uncertain of the reason for his presence.

“It’s insane. It’s akin to a screenplay,” Smith remarked. “It truly is, or something you’d observe on ’20/20.'”.

He is also charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Reeves. He is also charged with attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Smith. Tarr was also arrested.

On Monday, the Sheriff’s Department of Montgomery County revealed extra accusations against Tarr.

Tarr, as per the prosecutors, is facing charges for two instances of solicitation of murder for hire. Allegedly, while in jail for the double shooting, Tarr hired someone to kill Smith as he was recuperating from his injuries and also to eliminate a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy who was investigating the case.

Authorities have not revealed the existing link between Tarr and Smith before the shooting, nor have they furnished a reason for the occurrence.

After successfully reconstructing Smith’s skull to improve his cosmetic appearance and clear up an infection from prior surgery, Dr. Victor Williams, a neurosurgeon, transferred him to another hospital for further medical care. Smith is now regaining some strength this spring.

“We were uncertain if he would make it through,” Williams expressed.

As Smith advanced, while undergoing his in-patient occupational and physical therapy, Williams mentioned that the prognosis kept changing.

Smith stated that living his life confined to a wheelchair was not a viable choice for him.

Smith uttered, “‘For the purpose of malice’ it will suffice, and I will persist in doing so because that individual, who you were informed about, cannot wrong him, I informed you about him”.

At Club Fitness, Smith’s personal trainer assists him in exercising and developing his physical power, now that he has finished his in-patient rehabilitation. Despite encountering partial paralysis on the left side of his body, he is actively striving to enhance both his left arm and leg. Following his in-patient therapy, Smith has subsequently concluded it and currently engages in exercise and strength-building sessions with his personal trainer at Club Fitness.

Smith can now stroll with the aid of a walking stick, which is particularly astonishing to his medical staff.

Williams said, “It’s a miraculous recovery that he’s been able to make strides in. I think it’s hard work and watching him go through this recovery process that makes me believe it’s a miracle. Ultimately, he’s been able to make progress and overcome obstacles, which is truly remarkable.”
