USC was ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, but they also earned the No. 1 spot in the coaches’ poll. They defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS national title game, resulting in a co-championship outcome. The LSU Tigers were also defeated by USC, leading to a split national championship. USC secured their victory in the Rose Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines with a 28-14 win.
The Oklahoma Sooners, with a record of 19-55, defeated the USC Trojans, becoming the first team since the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1994-95 to win the national AP championship for the second time. USC, with a regular-season record of 12-0 in 2004, secured a spot in the BCS game.
Nebraska Cornhuskers – 1994-95 season.
In 1994, the Cornhuskers assembled an unprecedented two-year period, amassing a perfect 12-0 regular-season record and tallying 40 or more points in six out of 12 games. The defense conceded 15 points or less in seven matches. During the national championship game held at the Orange Bowl, the Cornhuskers found themselves trailing the Miami Hurricanes 17-9 in the fourth quarter, yet Nebraska orchestrated a remarkable comeback and emerged victorious with a 24-17 win. In the national championship game at the Fiesta Bowl, the Cornhuskers’ offense dominated, securing a resounding 62-24 victory against the Florida Gators and showcasing their supreme scoring ability. This win also led Nebraska to claim the national championship title.
