In 2021, a mere year following the revelation of being non-binary, Demi Lovato, a pop star belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, has openly explained the authentic motives behind their decision to once again embrace the use of she/her pronouns.
Merely a few weeks following their announcement of being pansexual in May 2021, Demi Lovato made a public declaration of their non-binary identity, expressing a preference for they/them pronouns. In a heartfelt video, they also shared their acceptance of she/her pronouns, embracing both identities.
As time goes by, as their gender develops, the “Cool for the Summer” vocalist has contemplated their gender fluidity, sensing a balance between both masculinity and femininity, and their method of maintaining their identity as “unrestricted and liberated” ever since.
The podcast “The Spout” featured an interview with Dhia Tamara, where they discussed the addition of a feminine pronoun “due to a change” and how some people were not paying attention to the reaction. Later, they clarified in their Instagram bio and quietly updated their pronouns again. These updates made headlines once more in May 2022.
One year later, in a recent interview with GQ Hype Spain on Tuesday (13 June), they elaborated on their choice.

The 30-year-old singer-songwriter informed GQ, “It was completely draining. I consistently had to enlighten individuals and clarify why I associated with those pronouns.”
“I simply became exhausted. However, for that exact reason, I am aware that it is crucial to persist in disseminating the message.”
In the interview, they shared their exhaustion in navigating the everyday difficulties and gender-neutral spaces due to the binary gender of ideas that force individuals to conform, as well as their genderqueer identity.
The Grammy-nominated artist stated, “I confront this on a daily basis.” “Although I don’t fully relate to it, such as having to use the women’s restroom in public facilities.”
I feel that I am unable to comprehend and distinguish between the genders, and you are the only one who has two options. This also occurs when you need to provide specific information or fill out government documents or forms.
As time passes, there will be an increasing number of choices available. I believe this needs to be altered since currently, there are no additional options and I am limited to selecting a woman.
In August 2022, during a podcast, she delved deeper into the topic. It was inspired by their journey of gender identity, with their eighth studio album “Freak” featuring the song “Fvck Holy” being released around the same time.
She elucidated, “My vitality was equilibrated in my masculine and feminine energy, particularly in the previous year. I am such a adaptable individual that, for me, I sensed like.”
I simply experienced the sensation of being human. I didn’t specifically feel masculine. I didn’t particularly feel feminine. I felt uncertain about which restroom to use when confronted with the options labeled ‘women’ and ‘men’.
Once more, I have recently embraced a softer and more feminine side of myself. It’s simply a matter of experiencing human emotions at your core. That’s what matters to me, understanding and appreciating what they are.
Respect is particularly important when it comes to learning, especially when it involves pronouns. It can be a bit confusing for everyone when some people mix them up. I personally believe that nobody is perfect, but it’s crucial to strive for it.
Despite previously announcing their intention to stop touring in December due to poor health, they have not ceased to release new music. Lovato continues to keep their fans guessing about their next professional endeavor, particularly in terms of their musical pursuits.
They made their way back to the recording studio and provided a sneak peek of their upcoming album through a TikTok video. Additionally, they bravely battled against Ghostface in their most recent music video called “Still Alive,” which was featured on the soundtrack for Scream VI. These endeavors firmly establish their reputation as a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
