On April 13, 2023, we celebrate several national observances including National Peach Cobbler Day, National Make Lunch Count Day, National Borinqueneers Day, National Thomas Jefferson Day, and National Scrabble Day.
Each year on National Scrabble Day, which is recognized on April 13th, the game that eventually settled on the name Scrabble was developed by an unemployed architect and amateur artist named Alfred Mosher Butts. Originally named Lexiko, then Criss-Cross, and finally Words, the game was not produced until 1948 and it wasn’t until the midst of the depression that the word game began to gain popularity.
NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATING THOMAS JEFFERSON
On April 13th, 1743, Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, was born. Each year, April 13th is celebrated as Thomas Jefferson National Birth Day to honor his birth.
DAY OF THE BORINQUENEERS
On April 13th, the United States Army designates the 65th Infantry Regiment as the regiment of the Infantry. This day recognizes the sacrifices of the Puerto Rican Regiment of the Volunteer Infantry, known as the Borinqueneers.

Ingredients:.
One cup of brown sugar, one and one-fourth cup of corn syrup, four eggs that have been beaten, four tablespoons of butter, one teaspoon of vanilla, and one and a half cups of pecans.
Instructions:.
Preheat the oven to 350°. In a medium bowl, mix together the pecans, vanilla, butter, and eggs. In a medium saucepan, combine the corn syrup and brown sugar and heat until the sugar melts and the mixture boils. Pour the sugar mixture slowly into the egg mixture, beating it together. Pour the combined mixture into the pie crust and bake for 45 minutes.

1920
Helen Hamilton Gardener, the highest-ranking woman in the federal government, is being sworn in as one of the three U.S. Civil Service Commissioners by President Woodrow Wilson. During that time, government employees were ensured positions in the Civil Service Commission based on personal relationships rather than merit.
1964
Sidney Poitier, an African American man, wins the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the film “Lilies of the Field,” becoming the first African American to be awarded this prestigious accolade.
1997
In the Augusta, Georgia Masters Tournament, Tiger Woods emerged as the youngest champion at the age of 21. Additionally, the tournament saw the first victory by an African American.

Thomas Jefferson – 1743
Thomas Jefferson, the writer of the Declaration of Independence, served as the third President of the United States for two terms, from 1801 to 1809. Under Jefferson’s leadership, the country’s size doubled with the acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase. To explore the newly acquired vast territory to the west, Jefferson initiated the Corps of Discovery and appointed fellow Virginian Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead the expedition.
Frank Woolworth – Born in 1852
In 1912, Woolworth & Co expanded to 37 states by merging with other merchants. In Lancaster, PA, he established a store that sold items for 5 and 10 cents. Despite the failure of his initial store, the entrepreneur persisted with his concept for a discounted store.
Samuel Beckett – 1906
In 1969, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Irish author is renowned for his plays Waiting for Godot and Endgame.
Eudora Welty – Born in 1909
The author of short stories from Mississippi received the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for her book The Optimist’s Daughter.
John Biggers – Born in 1924
The paintings by John Biggers are publicly displayed in various locations in Houston, as well as at Hampton University in Virginia and Winston-Salem University in North Carolina. His reputation flourished during the 1990s after World War II, as he honed his artistic skills.
Garry Kasparov – 1963
Deep Blue emerged victorious. Nevertheless, in the subsequent year, Kasparov emerged triumphant. In the initial encounter, Kasparov faced off against IBM’s supercomputer Deep Blue on two occasions.
