As per recently disclosed court records, the 6-year-old child charged with shooting his first-grade teacher, Abby Zwerner, in Newport News, Virginia in January purportedly confessed to the act on the very same day.
The shooting that occurred in Norfolk in January was immediately reported by WVEC, the ABC affiliate station, based on documents provided by ABC News. The alleged shooter made statements declaring that “I did it” and “I got my mom’s gun last night.”
According to the documents, Taylor allegedly stores the key for the gunlock under her bedroom mattress. Additionally, Taylor informed the police that she placed her purse, where she believed her firearm was kept with the trigger lock engaged, on her bedroom dresser on the morning of the incident. The documents state that Deja Taylor, the mother of the 6-year-old accused of shooting Zwerner, reported to the police that she also believed her firearm was stored in her purse with the trigger lock engaged on the morning of the shooting.
She is expected to receive her sentence later this year. She did not consume cannabis; rather, she lawfully bought the firearm and alleged that Taylor deliberately provided a fabricated written statement. The shooting incident involved a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, which the police claim Taylor had in his possession while using marijuana. In June, Taylor admitted guilt to using marijuana while having a firearm.
Federal prosecutors stated that neither a key nor a trigger lock was discovered, and there was also no lockbox. Nonetheless, Taylor informed the police that she typically keeps her firearm in her handbag with a trigger lock attached, or in a lockbox, during the month of January.
Taylor previously told ABC News that she saw the gun when it was locked and obtained by James Ellenson, the family attorney, who later said nobody knows how the boy got it.
Recovery is working well for him, thanks to the amazing professionals and support from his grandparents’ therapy. He had some extreme emotional issues and was allegedly involved with a 6-year-old shooter.
Newly released documents also provide information about the shooting and the moments before and after. Zwerner, a police officer, stated that after the shooting, the woman was taken to the hospital where she informed them that she observed a child standing by his desk and pulling a firearm out of his jacket pocket. When she asked him what he was doing, he pointed the firearm at her. According to the documents, she was shot in her left hand and torso, striking her and the child.
Zwerner, a specialist at Richneck Elementary School, later told the police that she heard a gunshot as she was walking past and saw Korvac restraining the boy, who allegedly made statements admitting to the shooting.
Concerns were disregarded, but the school officials had been warned that the student had a firearm. The school district has been sued for $40 million, and the teacher who was in her teaching position has since resigned. Additionally, Zwerner, who was hospitalized for nearly two weeks following the shooting, has required several surgeries.
