The greater Chesterfield County community is mourning the deaths of high school students Hammitt William and Booth Nicholas at James River High School.

James River High School shared the names of the students in an email with their fellow classmates and school community.

Dr. Amanda Voelker, the principal of James River, expressed, “During this challenging period, we will be thinking of these families. Both families have confided in us and requested that I relay this message to you.” Additionally, “Tomorrow, counselors and administrators will be informing their peers about this situation to offer support, and they will continue to do so on Friday.”

Hammitt and Booth were killed in an early Tuesday evening crash along West Road Gun Old, in block 3200 of Chesterfield County.

The police in Chesterfield stated that the driver was traveling on Old Gun Road around 5:47 p.M. When he entered a curve at a high rate of speed and lost control of the BMW. The car then flipped over and hit a retaining wall.

Booth and Hammitt were stuck inside the car and passed away at the location.

According to Chesterfield Police Sergeant Stephan Rouze, senior assassin is a game organized by students that resembles the game Booth and Hammitt were playing on the day of the accident, but instead of playing tag with water guns. Other students informed the Chesterfield Police that Booth and Hammitt were engaged in a game called “senior assassin” at the time of the crash.

Based on the evidence, Rouze stated that the collision was not connected to the game, and no other vehicles were tailing the students’ car at the time of the accident.

In the wake of a loss to our community, the Senior High School River James Assassin announced on their Instagram page that the money collected for the game would now be donated by families. The game would end early.

Dana Smith, the neighboring resident, mentioned that he heard what seemed to be a “significant, tumultuous collision.”

He stated, “When [the neighbors] arrived at the scene, the vehicle was already consumed by fire. Unfortunately, it appeared unlikely that there were any survivors.” “It is truly tragic for multiple reasons. As I stood there towards the end of the evening, I overheard one of the officers mentioning, ‘this is the difficult part of my duty, informing the parents.'”

Smith referred to Old Gun Road, where the designated speed limit is 35 mph, as “a hazardous route.”

He said, “It seems to me that you have a couple of terrible recipes that can lead to disaster, with a road that stretches long with narrow stretches and people who speed.”

  • Smith expressed concerns about the narrowness and windiness of the road, noting the scarcity of stop signs and the limited space between the road and ditch, particularly on curved sections. He warned, “If you happen to veer off the road, there’s a high chance of flipping over, especially when driving on Old Gun towards Cherokee.” Smith suggested widening certain areas of the road to better accommodate these turns, considering the steep drop-offs.

Rouze mentioned that there have already been a minimum of six fatal accidents in Chesterfield County thus far in 2023.

He stated that the accident emphasizes why the police force strictly enforces speed limits.

Expressed Rouze, “It’s a calamity. Typically, we refrain from reducing opportunities, as we desire to prevent this from affecting another person’s loved ones.” You will witness our presence constantly, every day of the year, apprehending individuals. We approach the aspect of law enforcement with great earnestness, as we are aware of the eventual consequences, particularly when inexperienced teenage drivers exceed the speed limit.
