‘The Phantom of the Opera’ closes on Broadway after 35 years

The show at the Majestic Theatre, which had a cast of current actors and included the original star Sarah Brightman, ended with a reprise of “The Music of the Night,” performed by members of the crew in their regular clothes. This particular show had a total attendance of 13,981.

Nick, who died last month after a prolonged battle with pneumonia and gastric cancer, took the final stage in a black suit and tie, which was dedicated to his last show.

Lloyd Webber expressed, “During his childhood, he was exposed to certain pieces of this music.” Brightman concurred, grasping his hand, “While Andrew was composing it, he was physically present. Hence, his son is present among us. Nick, we have a great affection for you.”

Cameron Mackintosh, the producer, provided optimism to certain individuals in the crowd that they would have the chance to witness the Phantom once again, and possibly even sooner than they expect.

He said, “It’s only a matter of time. ‘Phantom’ is one of the greatest and I have seen all the great musicals over the past 55 years as a producer. Have I been asking the question of when will ‘Phantom’ return again and again?”

“Phantom” has been a fixture on Broadway since its opening on January 26, 1988. It is a costly musical to sustain, with a large orchestra and cast, as well as elaborate costumes and sets. The pandemic may have been the final straw, but “Phantom” has also weathered cultural shifts, war on terrorism, and recessions.

John Riddle exclaimed right before rushing inside to perform as Raoul for the last time, “It’s bound to be an amazing evening. If there ever was a spectacle, we’re concluding with a spectacle.”

“Phantom” narrates the tale of a disfigured musician who haunts the Paris Opera House and becomes deeply infatuated with a pure-hearted soprano named Christine, inspired by a novel written by Gaston Leroux. Webber’s extravagant songs encompass “Masquerade,” “Angel of Music,” and “All I Ask of You.”

Riddle and Kouatchou stood next to him, the Specter beckoned him to come to the edge of the stage, but received applause during the final bow, substituting for Ben Crawford as the Specter, Laird Mackintosh replacing Ben Crawford as the Specter, Emilie Kouatchou as Christine and Laird Mackintosh filling in for Ben Crawford as the Specter, the New York performance bid farewell with Emilie Kouatchou as Christine and Laird Mackintosh taking the place of Ben Crawford as the Specter. Additionally, Riddle was present.

The late director Hal Prince, choreographer Gillian Lynne, and set and costume designer Maria Björnson were also honored. The orchestra seats were filled with Christines, Raouls, and Phantoms, and a video showcased many of the actors who had previously portrayed important characters in the production.

At the end of the performance, flutes were passed out on stage and during intermission, free champagne was offered. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who attended separate productions of “Boulevard Sunset” by Lloyd Webber on Broadway, also saw Glenn Close perform.

“I saw my first musical when I was a 4-year-old child in Toronto, it was the Phantom of the Opera at the Opera House. I didn’t know what a musical was, I had never seen one before. Now, over 30 years later, it’s incredible that Broadway shows are closing.”

She stated, “However, this is the situation.” She mentioned, “Alright, I will proceed with my jog, ‘Phantom’ will persist, and there will be additional Christines of diverse ethnicities.” Kouatchou, who made history as the inaugural African American woman in the New York production, never anticipated that the show would come to an end.

On Broadway alone, it has generated over $1.3 billion in revenue. Throughout 70,000 performances, the production has been staged in 17 different languages and witnessed by over 145 million individuals across 183 cities since its initial premiere in London back in 1986.

The most popular songs of the year are “Faith” by George Michael, “Roll With It” by Steve Winwood, and “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.

The critics were positive, describing the musical as “a impeccably crafted theater piece” and the shower of entertainment with fantasy and fun that the audience wants, saying nothing more than the New York Times and the Daily News.

“The critically mauled show, “Bad Cinderella,” is one of the means by which composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has closed The Rock’s Sunset Boulevard. Other musicals by Webber include “Phantom of the Opera,” “Evita,” “Superstar,” and “Cats.”

In 1997, performances of “The Lion King” began, which started in 1996, and it became the longest-running show, surpassing “Chicago,” which means it will be closing. The show’s weekly grosses, which surpassed $3 million, were pushed past previous records due to a flood of revived interest and ticket sales. Originally scheduled to close in February, the closing of “Phantom” was pushed to mid-April.

During the pandemic, Broadway shows such as “Wicked,” “The Lion King,” and “Hamilton” have faced significant challenges and experienced a decline in popularity. However, after a period of struggle, these shows have managed to rebound and regain their popularity. The theaters were closed for more than 18 months due to the pandemic, which greatly impacted the entire Broadway industry.

Partially disguised, he is nonetheless the epitome of Broadway’s comeback, The Phantom. Ensuring the safety of staff members and conducting routine COVID-19 testing, including covering all associated expenses, has also posed challenges due to the ongoing pandemic. The city, which used to attract a constant flow of visitors and particularly tourists for “Phantom,” has not yet seen a return to pre-pandemic levels, even though it usually guarantees a steady stream.

In other locations, fans can always catch the Phantom. Its 36th anniversary production is celebrated in the flagship London, as well as in the Czech Republic, South Korea, Italy, Sweden, Australia, Greece, and Japan. There are also productions in Bucharest that are open. Another production will open in Vienna in 2024.

Kouatchou, who walked the red carpet before the final show in a hot pink clinging gown with a sweetheart neckline and a cutout, revealed the bitterness that was undercut by the big send-off, showing the most unacknowledged darkness of Broadway.

She remarked, “It somewhat sweetens it, correct?” This, we have the opportunity to commemorate at the conclusion. Everyone gathers and indulges in beverages, laughter, and conversation regarding the performance and all the triumphs and challenges we have encountered. In a grand manner, it is drawing to a close.
