The Boy Who Fell From the Stars (And They Found Dragons #1) – Rachelle and Ted Dekker

Genres: Children’s Goodreads. In November 2021, the #1 Dragons Found They And series, Maven Millie, The White Sword, and The Golden Vial were published on Scripturo. Additionally, Rachelle Dekker, the author of this book, also wrote The Boy Drummer, The Promise, The Green Sinner, The Dream Traveler’s Quest, The Book of Light, The Curse of Shadownman, The Garden Serpent, The Final Judgment, The Bronze Medallion, and The Nine Stars Who Fell from the Sky, which were all highly acclaimed by Ted Dekker.

It is said a child will lead them. But lead them where? Jack is just 12, born on an Ark orbiting Earth among 169 survivors of a global apocalypse who eagerly await the planet’s restoration so they can return to the surface. With supplies dangerously low, the time for waiting is over. Humanity must return now or die among the stars. Unfortunately there is a problem. A big one. Dragons have inexplicably risen from Earth’s ashes. Worse, they emit a global toxin deadly to all over the age of puberty. After much debate, the Ark’s leaders realize that humanity’s only hope is to send teams of specially trained children to hunt and eliminate the dragon queen. But Jack is frail and deemed unworthy for the dangerous mission. So begins a tale leads readers, young and old alike, on a journey with Jack, the child who will lead them all in the most unlikely of ways. A journey to an Earth they could not have imagined. An Earth where humanity’s fear takes physical form as dragons that can only be defeated through a love that casts out all fear.

In the wake of a nuclear war that destroyed the Earth, Solomon Jack, a boy who fell from the Stars, has been made immune to the toxin that is one of the eight diseases in his blood. The Boy Who Fell from the Stars begins a plan to save humanity, where children must be sent back to their home to escape the toxic breath of dragons that have taken over Earth. When they returned home, they discovered something most unusual.

The plan to kill the dragons with spears is not a good plan, as the adults who have the idea that killing the children will kill the dragons is not going to work. This idea thematically fits with Dekkers’ message, but it is a typical trope of weak defeating strong, with brains being more powerful than brawn. Jack is portrayed as an outcast, seen as weaker physically than his companions, and not considered for the task at hand. However, it helps to settle into the story, as it shows rather than tells a lot about the character. The first part of the book sets up the storyline by providing a lot of exposition and explanation.

The next book in the series picks up with the characters already feeling the effects of the dragon’s toxin. They crash land on a hostile planet, where they are hostile towards each other. The group immediately starts off on the wrong foot and departs from Earth. Who will be at the end of the book? However, someone doesn’t want them to go back. There is something working against them. The bulk of the book sets up the plans to leave, but not in a subtle way. The mission is being sabotaged, and the book leaves the reader with not-so-subtle hints about who is behind it.

Readers will be able to see themselves as Jack, navigating this unexpected journey on Earth. One thing that makes the book good is Jack’s ability to develop a sense of identification and camaraderie, allowing readers to feel a sense of connection. I suppose it fits more for the intended age group, but the book seems a bit underdeveloped. This is because it packs a lot into a small space, as it is a children’s book with around 30,000 words. It’s responsible for establishing the storyline and building the world, which requires a lot of work and elements. The Boy Who Fell from the Stars carries a heavy load.
