Student accused of attacking teacher’s aide over Nintendo Switch held on $1 million bail

As per court documents, the accusation against a high school student from Florida who is alleged to have assaulted a teacher’s aide during a video game confrontation has been elevated to adult court, where he now confronts a felony charge. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

The 17-year-old male accused was charged with aggravated battery on a first-degree felony and left an unconscious woman, who was an employee of the school board, which is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

As per the district, a teaching assistant is designated to students with personalized education plans, the occurrence took place on Feb. 21 at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast where the lady is employed as a teaching assistant, as stated in a charging affidavit.

The release stated that the student’s Nintendo Switch was taken away from him during class because he was so upset.

The footage exhibits a teenager physically assaulting a teacher’s assistant as a result of the staff member confiscating the teenager’s Nintendo Switch in the middle of a class.

As per the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the student briskly approached the woman, causing her to fall to the ground and lose consciousness, as captured on the school surveillance footage.

The sworn statement indicated that the adolescent hit her in the rear and the posterior of the cranium approximately 15 instances. The footage depicted the pupil kicking and pummeling what seems to be an incapacitated lady multiple times in the rear and cranium.

The release mentioned that additional individuals hurried to assist the employee who was unable to safeguard herself.

She was transported to a medical facility for medical care.

On Tuesday, the sheriff’s department informed USA TODAY that the injured party had been discharged from the medical facility.

According to court documents, “ECHO,” which stands for East Coast Habilitation Options, is the facility in Palm Coast where the teenager was residing in a group home.

The home’s job advertisement states that it assists individuals with autism, cognitive impairments, and behavioral difficulties, encompassing children, teenagers, and adults. On the organization’s Facebook page, it is characterized as a “residential agency for children and young adults facing behavioral challenges.”

As per a charging affidavit, the adolescent commenced striking a desk and a computer system, resulting in a monitor toppling to the ground when a deputy replied that he did not possess a response. Subsequent to the assault, the teenager inquired about the consequences that awaited him and whether he would be permitted to go back to his residential facility.

Based on the charging affidavit and the footage from the body camera, the adolescent began spitting in the direction of the victim and subsequently shouted that he would cause her demise. As the student was escorted away in handcuffs, he happened to pass by the area where medical staff were attending to the employee.

He is currently detained on a bail amount of $1 million at the Flagler County Jail, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
