# ¿Por qué existen los años con febreros bisiestos y cuándo será el próximo?

The reason why leap years exist has several historical and scientific explanations.

This year, there will be eclipses and meteor showers, explore the number of planets, stars, and galaxies in the universe or learn how to observe the constellations in the sky. But before telling you everything, if you are interested in these topics, visit our article on the astronomical calendar for 2023.

Let’s start with the beginning: what does it mean for a year to be leap year? The question may seem obvious, but it actually shouldn’t be, since many people ask Google about it. The answer is there: a leap year is one that has an extra day, that is, 366 days instead of 365. And that extra day is always added in the month of February, which that year consists of 29 days instead of 28, now we’ll tell you why.

## ¿Por qué existen años bisiestos?

The Earth’s completion of its orbit around the Sun every 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds is commonly referred to as an “astronomical year”. This duration, equivalent to 365.242 days, was recognized by advanced ancient civilizations as the basis for measuring time, as they observed natural phenomena such as sunrise, sunset, and the changing of seasons. This understanding of time applies to humans and all other living creatures.

How did the Roman society come up with a solution to that discrepancy, which was inspired by the previous Greek and Egyptian scholars, in order to create the Julian calendar? The astronomer Sosigenes advised Julius Caesar in 46 BC to introduce an additional day every fourth year, as the remaining decimals almost added up to a whole day. But how exactly are these 0.242 days measured, over a span of two thousand years?

The problem was apparently solved. The effect on the math was that it is not a fourth, but slightly less, (0.242) (0.25). This was done by the nature of passing the Julian calendar days 0.008 ahead each year.

There was no solution to the problem. For ten days, this error had been accumulating, progressing since the 16th century.

## Why are leap years every four years?

The years 1900 and 1800 were not leap years, just like the years 1700 and 2100. But the year 2000 was a leap year, with the additional day being added only to the century-starting years that are divisible by 400. This prevented this cumulative error, and it was Pope Gregory XIII who determined the elimination of certain leap years. This is where the Gregorian calendar comes into play.

The Gregorian calendar, in recognition of this pope, was implemented in 1582 and has been in place ever since, remaining in usage up to the present time.

## ¿Por qué se le asigna un día adicional a febrero en años bisiestos?

The Roman superstition, however, all about nature, once again sees that there is a reason why the shortest month of the year is also chosen, is there any reason why February should be chosen as the month?

Agriculture for the Romans was only barren and cold, the two previous months. March was the beginning of the year for them. The months are designed to adjust to the harvest and planting seasons and the lunar calendar.

Pompilio Numa, who was the emperor, decided to get rid of all the months by subtracting 30 days from each one, considering that the even numbers were a symbol of bad luck in Roman society.

Burial ceremonies were common and furthermore, February was selected because it was regarded as a month of minimal significance. In this instance, 28 was selected, since the records didn’t match, thus necessitating the inclusion of at least one month with an equal number of days.

On the sixth day of the second month, this was transformed. On the following day, an extra day was added. The month of February was then established as the “double sixth” or “sextum bis” month in Latin.

The comfort and especially the tradition have been maintained due to the short length of the month of February, except for the month of February, whose short length has been maintained due to tradition, but especially for convenience, have left all the months of our calendar with 30 or 31 days, subsequent modifications.
