  • Detainees at a Dartmouth jail engaged in a standoff with staff on Friday. New images show improvised weapons, wrecked furniture, and other damage.

The Bristol County Sheriff’s Office released images of the aftermath of a standoff between detainees and staff members at a jail in Dartmouth. Bristol County Sheriff’s Office

Following the aftermath of the incident, authorities have published images of the prolonged confrontation with personnel, resulting in a gathering of detainees evolving into a rebellion at a Dartmouth prison, seventy-two hours afterwards.

Officials are currently documenting all the damage inflicted on the facility at the Bristol County House of Correction, in order to plan for repairs. The aftermath of the confrontation at the correctional facility was captured in numerous photos shared on Facebook by the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office on Monday.

The Boston Globe reported that the 20 pretrial detainees who allegedly organized the uprising are expected to face charges for their role.

The work renovation started around 7 a.M. On Friday when staff tried to relocate male detainees to two units in order to reduce the risk of suicide and make renovations to install plumbing for toilets, the Bristol Sheriff told Heroux paper.

The location around 9 a.M. Witnessed the departure of the correctional officers, and it is said that the men declined to vacate. After them, they secured the outer doors and the detainees in their housing units commenced causing harm.

They would not have been able to damage the property if the detainees’ cells had been locked individually. Heroux told The Globe that this was a major factor in the escalation of Friday’s incident. According to Heroux, inmates are no longer allowed to lock toilets in cells because of a class-action lawsuit from 1998.

“If there were barriers on cells, this wouldn’t have occurred,” Heroux told the publication. “It’s that straightforward.”

According to reports, two housing accommodations suffered damage. The first unit, which accommodated 75 individuals, endured substantial harm, while the second unit, housing 63 men, incurred minor damage. Nonetheless, the latter unit is currently unusable due to detainees vandalizing a control panel responsible for operating door locks.

Prior to reading it, the prisoners obliterated the counter proposal that was given by the staff. Within their prison cells, the detainees also possessed televisions and formulated a set of requests during the confrontation, encompassing reduced prices at the canteen and additional time for recreational activities. The inmates crafted makeshift weapons by honing fragments of dismantled furniture. Heroux informed The Globe about this.

Eventually, officers used tear gas and flash bangs to regain control of the situation and end the standoff. It has been reported that the involved detainees have been relocated to other jails throughout Massachusetts.
