Her Childhood

Mikaela Shiffrin, the second child of Jeff and Eileen Condron, was born on March 13, 1995, in Vail, Colorado. She grew up in New Jersey but raced on weekends in Vermont, where her mother Eileen was an avid skier, and attended high school in Massachusetts, in the Berkshires region. Both of her parents, Jeff and Eileen, originally hail from northwestern Massachusetts.

Since she was a child, Mikaela has been treated for ADHD, a type of hyperactivity disorder, and anxiety disorder. Before returning to Burke, she went to Colorado with her parents, but she also attended middle school in Burke. In 2003, when Mikaela was eight, her family moved to rural New Hampshire near Lyme, where her father worked at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Professional Path

Mikaela captured the attention of the international ski community with her victory in the slalom event at the U.S. National Championships. She made her debut in the World Cup in March, shortly after fighting off an illness that prevented her from winning a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships a few weeks earlier. In December 2010, she notched her first NorAm victory in a combined event, making her the first American girl to win at Italy’s prestigious junior championships since Lindsey Vonn in 1999.

The overall slalom championship was secured by the youngest female competitor in almost four decades at the culmination of the season. She emerged victorious in the 2013 World Championships, securing the gold medal, as well as triumphing in three additional slalom events in the World Cup that same season. Shiffrin also demonstrated her prowess by successfully defending her slalom title at the 2012 U.S. Championships. She was honored as the circuit’s rookie of the year, following her achievement of earning her first World Cup medal with a third-place finish in the slalom event in December 2011. The arrangement proved to be a triumph, as she embarked on a European tour with her mother, who provided culinary support and assisted with her studies for the 2011-12 season, enabling her to fully participate in the World Cup competition.

Mikaela’s graduation from Burke Mountain Academy in June 2013 served as a reminder that her career was still in its early stages.

Mikaela, who competed in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics at the age of 18, became the first American to win the event in 42 years. She made history as the youngest winner in Olympic history for that category, securing the gold medal in women’s slalom with a remarkable time of 1 minute and 44.54 seconds. Despite nearly crashing during her second run, she managed to recover and complete the course, showcasing her dominance in the sport. With her impressive performance, all eyes were on the young competitor, who had already earned the title of slalom world champion the previous year, becoming the youngest champion in history.

2019-2020 Season

Following her victory in the slalom the day before, Vreni Schneider of Switzerland equalled her 55 wins to overtake the Swiss skier on the list of the most successful female skiers, moving into third place. This happened at the World Cup race in Maribor, where Vlhová tied with Shiffrin, shortly before the start of the Alpine Ski World Championships in February 2019.

Despite battling a lung infection, Mikaela made history on the race day, becoming the first alpine skier to clinch four consecutive World Championships in the same discipline. She accomplished this remarkable feat by securing a second gold in the slalom. In challenging and unpredictable conditions, Mikaela managed to secure a bronze in the giant slalom, finishing behind Vlhová and Viktoria Rebensburg. Additionally, she triumphed in the super-G event, securing the coveted gold medal at the World Championships.

She accomplished a remarkable feat in a single season by becoming the first skier to win the overall, super-G, giant slalom, and slalom World Cup titles. The GS crystal globe was secured when she achieved her 17th win of the season and the 60th win of her career in the giant slalom the next day. Matching Stenmark’s record for the most World Cup slalom race wins, she emerged victorious in the slalom, marking her 16th win of the season and the 40th slalom win of her career. Furthermore, she went on to win the slalom race for the 41st time, solidifying her position as the skier with the highest number of World Cup slalom victories. It had been six years since Tina Maze was the last skier to accomplish the feat of winning World Cups in both technical and speed events in the same season, until Mikaela achieved this remarkable feat. Having already established an insurmountable lead to secure the overall and slalom titles earlier in the season, she earned her first World Cup title in a speed discipline. In the final race, she finished fourth, claiming her tenth World Cup title at the World Cup finals in Soldeu, where she began her campaign by clinching the super-G crystal globe. In March 2019, Mikaela surpassed the record she previously shared with Vreni Schneider, becoming the first alpine skier to achieve 15 World Cup victories in a single season when she triumphed in a slalom in Špindleruv Mlýn.

Federica Brignone took over the lead from Mikaela in the overall standings in the 2016 season. However, Petra Vlhova surpassed her to claim the top spot in the slalom rankings of the World Cup in Slovenia. On February 3, 2020, Mikaela unexpectedly took an indefinite break from the World Cup due to her father’s passing. Despite her considerable lead in the overall standings and her previous strong performances in the Super G, Downhill, and giant slalom, Mikaela only recorded 6 victories in the 2020 season, with most of them coming from the speed races in Bansko in January. She also experienced similar fluctuations in her slalom ranking. In the later part of the season, Petra Vlhova emerged as the runner-up, winning three slalom races and showing inconsistent performances in the technical races.

Her Physical Dimensions

Mikaela is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and she has an attractive 36B-26-35 body.
