Lionel Messi’s Instagram photo, which broke records by receiving over 74 million likes, allegedly showcased a counterfeit World Cup.
‘The Egg’ achieved a remarkable feat, as the highly favored picture on the photo-sharing application, after a thrilling victory over France in a penalty shootout, showcased a photograph of him jubilantly raising the trophy, marking a historic moment for the Argentinean superstar.
The Argentinian outlet Clarin has now explained that the trophy in Messi’s grasp on the on-pitch photos was a false fact, which has left fans with two explanations.
FIFA took away the original trophy for the podium pictures a few moments after president Gianni Infantino had presented it to Messi, as is customary.
The players did not realize that their pitch to make trophy replicas had duped many fans, so they took more pictures and selfies with them.
Paula Zuzulich, an Argentina supporter who was present in Qatar, informed Clarin that it took half a year to create it: ‘Prior to the World Cup, we contacted individuals involved in trophy production.
In the end, it was taken down to the pitch three times, but the idea was to sign players. The first member of Paredes’ family [Leandro] got the sign. Photos were taken of another player from a relative, another player from another player, another player from another relative. It was down there for 45 minutes, and we asked for a second time.
She stated: ‘FIFA security came and requested us to surrender it to verify that it was not the authentic one.
‘There are a few particulars, scores, and sculptures that are not alike, but the variation is minimal.’
Maria Di Angel’s eagle eyes noticed the difference between the replica and the original trophy at the bottom, as Messi managed to outpoint the person who was supposed to see the funny side of it.
Photographers captured the moment Di Maria pointed to the bottom of the replica before sharing a laugh about the misunderstanding with Messi.
Messi wasn’t the only one duped by the replica, as it will be immortalized on the stage centre of Instagram, where it is most liked.
“I can’t fathom it……. I’m still standing tall, I desired it immensely that I envisioned it countless times,” stated the caption Messi included in the post. “CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!”
‘I am immensely thankful to my family, to all those who have backed me, and also to everyone who had confidence in us.’
‘When Argentines unite and fight together, we are capable of achieving what we set out to do, and we will demonstrate that once again.’
‘The credit belongs to this collective, which transcends individuality; it is the power of everyone striving for the same aspiration.’
