Dr. Wumi Akintide, former Assistant Secretary of the Nigerian Civil Service, said that if he had voted in the 2023 presidential election, he would have voted for Peter Obi instead of Ahmed Bola Tinubu, his Yoruba compatriot.
He expressed his thoughts during a unique episode of the online interview show 90MinutesAfrica, which was presented by Rudolf Okonkwo on Sunday.
The close confidant of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, revealed that he did not vote for the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whom he described as an absolute catastrophe.
The electoral body subsequently declared Bola Tinubu, the APC candidate in the election, as the winner.
He further stated that even though he believed the former governor of Anambra State was the best candidate, he would not have been able to successfully govern with the current Nigerian constitution.
Dr. Akintide stated that if Obi Peter had won the election, there would be no way for him to govern, even if all the provisions in the constitution had been given to us, and I was convinced of that.
“However, he was unquestionably the finest individual; the majority of what he was pledging cannot be feasibly achieved (under the present constitution) when examined objectively.”
Obi Peter, who believed that many Christians from the southern region drove action against him, posited that he was well able to do what he was asked. He also believed that if Bola Tinubu had voted otherwise, many Christians would have rebelled against the vote for Obi Peter and the APC due to ethnic considerations. Tinubu Bola went further to say that Nigerians must do everything possible to alleviate the suffering being experienced by Nigerians in a situation similar to what is happening in Niger Republic, in order to avoid degeneration.
The well-known columnist said that although the president believed he was doing his best given the terrible situation inherited from the previous government, he would need more time to stabilize the nation as soon as possible.
He stated, “We do not desire for the events that occurred in Niger to occur in Nigeria.” “Considering the circumstances that President Tinubu inherited from the previous administration, I believe he is exerting his utmost efforts, and we ought to grant him additional time to rectify the errors.”
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), under the chairmanship of the Nigerian president, has imposed diplomatic and economic sanctions on the Republic of Niger, a landlocked country, in response to the military coup that ousted the democratically elected civilian government. The regional body is threatening to send troops into the country to restore the “constitutional order” if the coupists do not return power to the elected authorities.
Dr. Akintide expressed concern about the current economic hardship in Nigeria, occasioned by the removal of petrol subsidy, which is threatening the political stability of the country.
The seasoned administrator Tinubu, speaking further on the interventions by the President, noted that each of the 36 states hopes that the five billion naira allocated to them would not end up in the pockets of greedy officials, but rather serve as a cushion against economic hardship.
