Tennis’ top stars are headed for the hallowed clay courts at Roland Garros to compete for $53 million in French Open prize money. Boardroom serves up details on the purse, as well as which players are favored to win it all.
Tennis is life.
It’s the second important tournament of the season, and without a doubt, tennis is everything.
Starting on May 28, the first round of matches commences in Paris, featuring the leading singles and doubles players from ATP and WTA who are risking everything, aiming to be crowned as the champions of the French clay courts, symbolizing the King and Queen of the tournament.
There are plenty of tenacious competitors looking to claim the 2023 French Open crown, including Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning US Open champion and Novak Djokovic, the 22-time Grand Slam champion and birthday boy who is fresh off his 20th Grand Slam singles title. However, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any competitors who will miss the draw, such as the celebrated and most recent champion, Rafael Nadal, who is not competing this year due to injury.
Coco Gauff, the runner-up from the previous year, has returned and is prepared for a recurrence, just like Iga Swiatek, the women’s singles champion of the 2022 French Open.
Before we take a look at who is playing in Paris and see the rate at which they are going to win the big prize at Roland Garros, let’s talk about how much of a chance the top candidates have to win the biggest share of the prize money in the 2023 French Open.

The organizers of this year’s competition are offering even higher monetary rewards for players who excel on the clay courts of Paris.
Very good. The prize pool for the French Open 2023 represents a bump of 12% from last year’s total, amounting to a whopping $53 million.
In addition, both the men’s and women’s champions will see an increase of 9.1% in prize money for the singles draws in 2022, taking home a solid payday. They will also walk away with the iconic trophies designed by the famous Parisian jeweler, Mellerio Maison La, dating back to the 17th century.
The victor of the men’s singles will seize the Musketeers’ Cup, while the champion of the women’s draw will obtain the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup.
The second-place finishers will still receive $1.2 million, whereas players who reach the semifinals can potentially earn up to $675,161. However, not emerging as the ultimate winner does not imply that you will not leave with a substantial sum of money.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of each round and what it takes to secure the victory at Stade Roland Garros.
French Open Prize Money by Round (Singles)
Prize money figures for the Men’s & Women’s Singles championships are provided by the ATP Tour.
Result | Prize Money (USD) |
Champion | $2.5 million |
Runner-up | $1.2 million |
Semifinal | $675,161 |
Quarterfinal | $428,674 |
Round 4 | $257,204 |
Round 3 | $152,176 |
Round 2 | $103,951 |
Round 1 | $73,944 |
The winning men’s duo is awarded the Jacques-Brugnon Cup, and the women’s doubles champions receive the Simonne-Mathieu Cup. In addition, the champions also receive their own individual trophies. The runner-up duo receives a prize of $316,450, while the champions can earn a total of $633,075 in winnings. It is definitely worth noting the substantial prize money for both the men’s and women’s doubles draw.
While there are slight increases in pay in each round, it appears that the bulk of the purse increase is rewarded to players who lose in the first three rounds of the tournament, specifically those who exit earlier. These players are expected to receive between 11% and 13%.
In addition, participants who take part in the qualifying rounds, wheelchair tennis, and quad competitions will also earn higher earnings this year.
Who Are the Favorites to Win the French Open?
When it comes to determining the champion of the French Open, it is indeed a story of two competitions.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Swiatek is the favored contender to win the women’s competition with odds of -140. Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina, both with +700 odds, are the nearest competitors in terms of likelihood to secure the French title.
In the men’s competition, the nonattendance of Rafa — a titleholder who has triumphed 14 times — implies that the tournament is unpredictably competitive.
If the stars align, both Djoker and Alcaraz could end up clashing in the semifinals. Here’s a fun fact: Djokovic Novak sits close behind as the +230 underdog, but Alcaraz, the 20-year-old, is the favorite with odds of +155 according to Oddsmakers.
But unfortunately, there are many more participants who have the potential to achieve great success in Paris.
