Fact check: Scientists at CERN are not opening a ‘portal to hell’

In April, following a three-year break, researchers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known as CERN, recommenced their particle accelerator – the largest and most potent accelerator in the world.

Enhancements and maintenance had been carried out on the accelerator, known as the Large Hadron Collider, and researchers intend to utilize it to collide protons and gain further insights into the beginnings of the cosmos.

However, social media users are nevertheless suggesting that the machine has a different purpose, as shown in a TikTok video shared on Facebook on July 5th, which claims that scientists at CERN are using the machine to open doorways for demons.

The caption of the post states, “wicked spirits and evil principalities that it introduces, along with other spiritual realms (not Heaven or the bosom of Abraham), Hell, and other dimensions that reveal portals, an unknown demonic machine related to CERN.”

However, the assertion is unfounded.

Physics experts informed USA TODAY that scientists utilize the Large Hadron Collider to investigate matter by colliding particles at extremely elevated energies. There is no indication that researchers at CERN are involved in anything apart from scientific activities.

USA TODAY contacted the social media users who shared the assertion for a response.

Collider is unable to create portals

Dejan Stojkovic, a physics professor at the University at Buffalo, refuted the assertion that scientists at CERN are engaging in communication with infernal beings and utilizing the collider to unveil a gateway to the underworld, in an email to USA TODAY.

Stojkovic stated, “At the [Large Hadron Collider], there is absolutely no possibility of generating such a portal.” He further mentioned, “Considering our present-day advancements, within the framework of our conventional principles of gravity, we require an accelerator on the scale of the entire cosmos to produce a black hole or a wormhole, including minuscule ones.”

Stojkovic stated, “The particle accelerator employs a powerful magnetic field to boost charged particles, specifically protons, to extremely high energies within a circular tunnel. Detectors positioned along the beams capture the results of these collisions that occur when the two particle beams intersect.”

Stojkovic stated, “there is zero possibility that such a portal would emerge” thus these are minuscule particles. We were unaware of their existence, however, we could anticipate the creation of novel fundamental particles given that these energies have not been examined before in a regulated setting.

Today, an email from the University of York in the USA informed that Joshua Ruderman, an associate professor of physics, has discovered a new particle using a machine. He also stated that the creation of this particle is essentially the purpose of the collider machine.

For instance, the Higgs boson particle, which was “a crucial discovery for comprehending the origin of the cosmos,” gained significant media attention when the collider unearthed it in 2012, as reported by the Washington Post.

Scientists have reportedly found three previously unknown subatomic particles, as reported by Reuters. According to CERN, these particles do not possess the ability to absorb, reflect, or emit light, rendering them exceptionally challenging to detect. The Washington Post stated that scientists have restarted the machine in April with the purpose of examining dark matter, which is widely believed to constitute a substantial portion of the cosmos.

Our assessment: Incorrect

Experts said that scientists use a machine to collide particles at very high energies for studying matter. The collider cannot open up portals to other dimensions. There is no evidence of scientists at CERN being engaged in anything other than scientific-related activities. Based on our research, the claim that scientists at CERN are communicating with demonic entities and opening a portal to hell is completely false.
