El Chapo’s last escape plan was foiled after Mexican officials discovered a second tunnel

In January 2016, authorities eventually apprehended him after he had been evading capture for several months. The co-creator of the Sinaloa Cartel, known for his notorious escape from the Altiplano maximum security federal prison in 2015 by digging tunnels, and a previous jailbreak in a laundry cart, was determined to be incarcerated in the very same facility he had previously escaped from, disregarding the guidance of prison officials.

Miguel Ángel Guzmán, the brother of El Chapo, along with other infamous leaders, had the entrance of the detention facility on the outskirts uncovered by the staff before El Chapo tried to make a second escape through a tunnel, as disclosed by prison authorities.

On January 19, 2017, the cartel leader was extradited to the United States after being transferred to another penitentiary in Ciudad Juárez.

All of the tunnels were subsequently demolished. No pictures have been revealed of the second underground passage.

According to the state news agency Notimex, Eduardo Durán Guerrero, an official from the prison in León Nuevo, said that El Chapo should be placed at a different facility.

El Chapo’s criminal organization produced commotion and tremors, which subsequently raised concerns among prison personnel upon hearing them. Suspicion arose among prison staff when the Mexican drug kingpin began frequently visiting the restroom vicinity.

An alternative solution was to search for the drug lord who accumulated a $14 billion wealth through the narcotics industry – revealing the alarming truth: they conducted a preliminary examination of the soil collected from the correctional facility.

Guerrero Durán stated that we were able to identify it because of the continuous monitoring we conducted on him, not just daily but even on an hourly basis.

On this occasion, the Mexican government acted promptly and relocated El Chapo to a prison in Ciudad Juárez.

During his time there, he was not allowed to talk to anyone except the psychologist and the jail official, whom he met once or twice.

The impressive subterranean passageway, built by gang members, was located beneath his prison cell in the stall bathroom, and it stretched for a mile. The police released photos of El Chapo’s first tunnel after his escape.

Notimex also acquired unedited video footage of a conversation between Durán Guerrero, the Mexican drug lord, and officials in the U.S. Just days before he was handed over.

During the short exchange, El Chapo tried to downplay his two prison escapes in 2001, as he begged for more recreational time in the prison yard and was escorted from the maximum security facility in Puente Grande, Jalisco, and tossed into the trunk of a getaway vehicle on a laundry cart.

“The issue is that you have evaded capture on two occasions,” Guerrero Durán informed El Chapo.

However, Guzmán calmly responded by stating, ‘well, that’s a different matter.’

Guerrero responded, ‘That’s the reason why security measures are in place. However, how effective are they?’ El Chapo timidly expressed, ‘Oh, I see. Security? I’m not implying that there is no security.’

Prison personnel were conducting cell inspections at least ’14 occasions’ per day, during which El Chapo expressed dissatisfaction with the unfairness of his sleep deprivation and also voiced concerns about his limited time remaining in Mexico.

El Chapo was transported to the United States on January 19, 2017.
