Can You Torture and Kill in Hogwarts Legacy?

Legacy Hogwarts is the first fully open-world game in the Harry Potter-themed series that allows players to explore the Wizarding World and Hogwarts Castle, expecting the freedom to torture and kill people, as well as please NPCs in the game, just like in the LEGO series. However, it is important to question the remains of this freedom, as Legacy Hogwarts is not developed as a kid-friendly game.

Hogwarts Legacy - Sebastian Sallow's Dark Legacy [4K]

The game developed by Avalanche Software, Hogwarts Legacy, confirmed that it will include a number of Dark Arts and Unforgivable Curses, allowing you to torture and kill your targets using your magical powers. However, unlike games such as Saints Row or Grand Theft Auto, the game does not have a morality system, so you can’t be certain that you can just randomly torture and kill innocent students or civilians.

In an interview with Moira Squier, narrative director at Legacy Hogwarts GamesRadar+, it was revealed that some players wanted to play as an evil character, knowing that the best way to do so is by using dangerous spells.

“Giving the player the option to use Unforgivable Curses was a decision not made lightly. We knew that many players have always wanted to play as Dark witches and wizards, and this option allows them to do so. […] Characters will react visually and audibly to seeing the player cast an Unforgivable, but we don’t have a morality system that punishes them for doing so.”

All three of the Unforgivable Curses can be learned in the game, as seen in the trailers for Sebastian’s Dark Sallow Legacy and the State of Play for the article.
