Bayern Munich triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-0 overall score in their last 16 clash, guaranteeing their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals for the fourth successive campaign. Meanwhile, PSG has been unsuccessful in progressing beyond this phase for the fifth occasion in the past seven years.
In the final moments of Bayern’s victory, Serge Gnabry, the substitute for his former club, made sure to score the decisive goal against Maxim Eric, the killer.
In the opening stages of the game, there were very few clear opportunities, as the area penalty was particularly threatening without a good midfield in a fast-paced play. Yann Sommer gathered aside an early strike from Kylian Mbappe.
Goretzka Leon comfortably picked up the ball from a distance, but his shot was too far from the goal. He should have produced a chance when Mbappe’s shot went wide, but he didn’t move well enough as PSG worked effectively to narrow the angle.
As the first half progressed, PSG applied more pressure, resulting in a scramble in the goalmouth. Sommer and de Ligt, along with Upamecano, tackled Messi at a critical moment but couldn’t deny him from regaining his balance.
Donnarumma skillfully deflected the low shot from Musiala across the goal, coming from the left side of the box. Both sides had their best chance at that stage, but Bayern took possession and had a meaningful spell of play for almost the entire first half.
In the closing stages of the first half, PSG almost gifted the lead to Bayern when Vitinha, who couldn’t get enough power on his shot, cleared the ball off the line. The goal area gaped open for an off-balance Vitinha, who lost the ball when he wanted to dribble past Bayern’s stopper, almost as if he was the goalkeeper. It was a moment of madness after Sommer’s rescue to De Ligt.
Thomas Muller made an attempt to play the ball in an offside position but did not actually touch it. His header found the back of the net, although it initially seemed like he was offside. Bayern had appeals for a penalty waved away when Choupo-Moting went down under pressure from Danilo Pereira.
Bayern allowed a simple tap-in for Choupo-Moting, as Goretzka passed the ball to him after dispossessing Muller under pressure from Goretzka and a challenge from Muller on the edge of the penalty area. Teenage substitute El Chadaille Bitshiabu put Marco Verratti in a difficult position, leading to PSG’s own downfall when Choupo-Moting eventually scored.
The header from Sergio Ramos, whose instant response almost managed to preserve Bayern’s two-goal cushion, was tipped wide by the diving Sommer at the post. The former Real Madrid skipper had another missed target on later, just as PSG had.
Alphonso Davies made an exceptional tackle when Mbappe posed a threat in the final moments, but the blame for PSG’s midfield also lies in their failure to provide the necessary support. Messi had a disappointing night, and Mbappe struggled overall. The visitors appeared uninspired and in desperate need of scoring two goals.
At the end of the game, PSG had gaps at the back when Joao Cancelo slipped a through ball to Gnabry, who was composed and finished one-on-one to seal the goal. However, the goal was disallowed for offside after the offside flag was raised in stoppage time, even though Mane Sadio had evened the score. Furthermore, Ramos was thrown up front to leave gaps in the PSG defense, and they were punished for it.
It was incredibly significant to demonstrate that the game ended with a 1-0 victory, as the defense had to come to the rescue of the goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, in the closing stages of the first half – rating: 6/10.
RB: Josip Stanisic – 7/10 – Chose over Joao Cancelo and proved his inclusion.
Never gave Mbappe a sniff either. Made a potentially goal-saving tackle on Messi in the first half. CB: Dayot Upamecano – 8/10.
CB: Matthijs de Ligt – 7/10 – A courageous sliding goal-line clearance saved Sommer’s embarrassment.
Excellent throughout the entire night. Alphonso Davies, with his expertly-timed late tackle on Mbappe, effectively eliminated any remaining possibility of a PSG comeback. Overall, I would rate his performance an 8 out of 10.
Leon Goretzka, a central midfielder, applied pressure on his opponent and managed to take a few shots on goal from a distance, resulting in him assisting an opportunistic goal. This performance was rated 7 out of 10.
CM: Joshua Kimmich – 7/10 – Controlled the speed and rhythm of Bayern’s actions. Significant defensive contribution.
RM: Kingsley Coman – 7/10 – His speed compelled PSG to contemplate extensively.
Thomas Muller (c) – 7/10 – unintentionally caused his team to lose one play by attempting to play the ball while offside, but he redeemed himself by successfully winning the ball high, enabling Chouo-Moting’s goal.
LM: Jamal Musiala – 8/10 – Appeared to be a genuine threat for Bayern when he gained possession.
However, perseverance ultimately led to success. Although he deserved a penalty and later had a goal disallowed, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting performed admirably, earning a rating of 8/10.

PSG player ratings (3-5-2)
Gianluigi Donnarumma, the goalkeeper, made a few decent saves but couldn’t do much about the second goal from Gnabry or the impressive goal from Choupo-Moting – rating 6/10.
CB: Danilo Pereira – 6/10 – Managed to withstand penalty claims in the initial stages of the second half.
Sergio Ramos, the center back, had two great opportunities for PSG but unfortunately missed the goal with a header later on. He also forced Sommer, the goalkeeper, to make an excellent save right after Bayern scored. For his overall performance, Ramos receives a rating of 7 out of 10.
Marquinhos (c) appeared to be fulfilling various roles within his designated center-back duties. However, his evening was cut short in the first half due to an injury.
RM: Achraf Hakimi – 6/10 – Performed adequately in defense against Davies, but lacked his own offensive prowess.
He failed to generate or locate his attacking teammates. He appeared unsteady when presented with an unguarded goal to target and displayed a lack of confidence. Central midfielder Vitinha receives a rating of 5 out of 10.
Although he played in danger, Marco Verratti, the teammate by the first place, lost the ball to Bayern, giving them their goal.
CM: Fabian Ruiz – 4/10 – Accomplished very few things.
LM: Nuno Mendes – 5/10 – Under the control of Stanisic.
ST: Lionel Messi – 5/10 – Engaged in sporadic moments and that was all.

The situation later became rather dull. His team failed to fully capitalize on their initial half control, but suffered the loss of two players due to injury before the start of the second half, resulting in a rating of 5/10 for Christophe Galtier.
