4 injured, 1 killed, in Englewood shooting; dozens injured in weekend violence, Chicago police say

Police in Chicago said that on Wednesday morning, during a gathering in the Englewood neighborhood on the Fourth of July, one person was fatally shot, five others were critically injured, and a man was beaten.

According to the authorities, a group had gathered at around 4:47 a.M. In the 5600-block of South Ada Street when someone fired a gun.

The 35-year-old man was shot in the chest and pronounced dead by the police. He was then transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 21-year-old man was transported to Stroger Hospital where he remains in critical condition after being battered in the head with a baseball bat, according to the police.

Initially, the Chicago police reported that a man was fatally beaten, but they later clarified that he is still in critical condition.

A 23-year-old male was shot in the stomach and taken to the University of Chicago in a critical state.

A 21-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in a stable condition, while a 29-year-old man was shot in the left foot and leg and transported to Advocate Christ Hospital.

Chicago authorities: 2 individuals injured, 1 fatally, close to South Loop homeless settlement.

A witness informed ABC7 that most people in Chicago were just having a good time celebrating the Fourth of July when a flurry of gunshots rang out.

“It looks like a parade was on the block. And it wasn’t a parade; it was a large party,” the witness said.

Witnesses stated that gunshots were discharged following numerous altercations that erupted on the streets.

CPD interim Superintendent Fred Waller expressed, “We are aware that this did not originate solely from one party, as evidenced by the presence of more than 100 discharged bullet casings. Currently, we are conducting an investigation to determine whether this incident was caused by internal factors or if an individual from outside fired into the crowd.”

A gentleman who attended the gathering mentioned that he departed approximately at 2 a.M.

He stated, “Chaos erupted.” “Most of them were having a good time, enjoying themselves, but a few of them were extreme; they constituted a massive gathering of individuals.”

The video footage depicts a significant law enforcement presence and groups of individuals engaged in altercations on the street.

The neighbors said they heard at least a hundred gunshots between 5 a.M. And 4:30 a.M. Even pictures showing a bullet hole in their living room window were sent.

A neighbor mentioned, “You seldom hear about things like this happening in a neighborhood where you live, and yes, you rarely hear about everything that’s happening and see it when you come home.”

After hours of shooting scraps from fireworks, the street was littered with empty liquor bottles and shell casings, raising unanswered questions about what went wrong at the Fourth of July party.

There are no individuals detained, and detectives from Area Three are conducting an investigation.

The police had received at least one complaint phone call regarding the party, which continued throughout the entire night.

Waller stated, “It is unclear exactly what happened until they began shooting. There are service calls where we are still looking for answers or where more should have been done. In hindsight, we are looking back as far as we can.”

On the Fourth of July, Chicago witnessed 20 individuals being shot, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of two individuals.

That’s nearly half of the city shot fatally over the entire holiday weekend, said Chicago police, with 57 being shot on the Fourth of July weekend.

According to the police, the number of shootings decreased by 37% and the number of homicides decreased by 50%. The police expressed satisfaction with these statistics on Wednesday at Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, considering that the Fourth of July weekend has historically been known for its high levels of violence in the city.

Officials in Chicago also made remarks about all of the celebrations during the weekend, which included NASCAR.

They mentioned that the intense rainfall on Sunday may have been a contributing factor in reducing the number of shootings.

Waller stated, “In Chicago, not only here, we are witnessing a significant increase in gatherings and a large number of people, almost as if it were a recipe. Of course, the weather was very warm. This weekend, all the agencies and the hardworking women and men of the Chicago Police Department contributed a lot to it, but the Weather always plays a part.”

He also stated that the police will not tolerate violence but, he noted that efforts in Roseland West to break up a large gathering of teens resulted in the recovery of six guns and no violence.

However, law enforcement still did attend to 45 distinct shooting locations.

Waller stated, “however, the endeavor was present.” “We cannot say that we did a great job, but we can say that we lost the lives of those people who we did a great job for overall,” we still feel that. “We are doing everything we can to prevent or decrease this trauma within our communities, and we will not tolerate this violence in our neighborhoods.”
